Incidence, characteristics and clinical relevance of acute stroke in old patients hospitalized with COVID-19

Abstract Background Stroke in the course of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been shown to be associated with more severe respiratory symptoms and higher mortality, but little knowledge this regard exists on older populations. We aimed investigate incidence, characteristics, prognosis acute stroke geriatric patients hospitalized COVID-19. Methods A monocentric cross-sectional retrospective study 265 COVID-19 wards. 11/265 presented a episode during hospitalization. Mortality rates two-group comparisons (stroke vs non-stroke patients) were calculated significant variables added logistic regression models risk factors. Results Combined ischemic hemorrhagic incidence was 4.15%. 72.7% events occurred care. Strokes altered state consciousness and/or delirium 81.8%, followed by focal neurological deficit 45.5%. In-hospital mortality (32.1% vs. 27.3%; > 0.999) institutionalization at discharge (36.4% 21.1%; 0.258) similar between without Conclusion Incident complicating old active smoking, stroke, low BMI. Acute did not influence early or rate discharge.
